Regency Endoscopy Unit offers endoscopy as a medical procedure that allows a doctor to observe the inside of the body without performing major surgery. An endoscope (fibrescope) is an instrument, which is a long flexible tube with a lens at one end and a video camera at the other end, is inserted through one of the body’s natural openings, such as the mouth, urethra or anus. The end with the lens is inserted into the patient. Light passes down the tube (via bundles of optical fibres) to illuminate the relevant area, and the video camera magnifies the area and projects it onto a television screen so the doctor can see what is there.
Our endoscopy unit has a range of endoscopes at our unit, where the endoscopes functions are dependent on the part of the body it is intended to investigate, in order to allow for a range of endoscopy diagnostic treatment to be performed in the unit. We have bronchoscope, colonoscope, gastroscope, duodenoscope, ultrasound scope, cystoscope and nasal scope.
If patients are experiencing symptoms, endoscopy is a form of investigation that can lead to a treatment plan if disease is detected. At Regency, our endoscopy unit is consists of 3 Respirologists, 2 Urologists, 2 Gastroenterologists and 3 surgeons perform more than 4,000 endoscopic procedures a year with the support of 6 nurses with endoscopy experiences, 2 nurses in training and a patient care assistant. Endoscopic procedures include locating, sampling or removing tumours or foreign objects from the lungs and digestive tract, taking small samples of tissue for diagnostic purposes (biopsy), removing bile stones from the bile duct and placing tubes (stents) through blockages in the bile duct, oesophagus, duodenum, or colon.
While our respirologist or gastroenterologist provides clinical management to patients undergoing endoscopy in the unit, our nurses will assist patients who are undergoing endoscopy, by providing adequate assistance to their needs.
The Endoscopy Unit caters for outpatient, inpatient, ICU/CCU, visiting and patients on holiday for endoscopy. The medical procedures offered in this unit are colonoscopy, bronchoscopy, and gastroscopy.
