Overview
The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Regency Specialist Hospital focuses on the diagnosis and surgical procedures for medical conditions and diseases that affect the heart, lungs, oesophagus and other organs located within the thorax (chest) region.
Conditions
Example: “Hypertensions” or “Shortness of breath”
Aortic Aneurysm
Conditions that can affect the aorta, the major artery that carries blood from the heart to the body. An aneurysm is an enlargement in the aorta that can rupture or burst. A dissection is a tear in the aorta, which is a medical emergency.
Coronary Artery Disease
Coronary artery disease is the most common type of heart disease and one of the leading causes of cardiovascular disease death in Malaysia.
Atherosclerosis
This is a medical condition when plaque builds up in the arteries that supply blood to the heart. As plaque continues to accumulate, it causes arteries to narrow over time.
Heart Attack
A heart attack is also known as myocardial infarction. It happens when a part of the heart muscle doesn’t get enough blood. Immediate treatment is needed to restore blood flow or the heart muscle will experience greater damage.
Slow Heart Rate, Irregular Heart Beat
An arrhythmia is an uneven heartbeat. It means your heart is out of its usual rhythm. It may feel like your heart skipped a beat, added a beat, or is "fluttering". It might feel like it's beating too fast (which doctors call tachycardia) or too slow (called bradycardia).
Procedures
Example: “Stenting” or “ECG”
Thoracotomy & Decortication of Lung Empyema
Thoracotomy is a surgery where a cut is done between the ribs to see the lungs or other organs in the thoracic cavity. Decortication is a procedure to remove abnormal tissue formed on the lung, chest wall or diaphragm.
VATs Bullectomy
A surgical procedure to remove air pockets in the lungs.
Coronary Angiography
Procedure to examine the heart's blood vessels to identify any blockages or issues.
Aortic Aneurysm Surgery
One of the most common type of surgery to repair an aortic aneurysm. Your surgeon replaces the weakened section of your aorta with a tube, or “graft,” made of a special fabric.
Insertion of Intra-aortic Balloon Pump (IABP)
A temporary procedure that inserts balloon-tipped catheter into a blood vessel and pushing it to the heart.
