Overview
The Department of Nephrology at Regency Specialist Hospital focuses on the diagnosis, prevention, management and treatment of medical conditions and diseases that affect the kidney.
Conditions
Example: “Hypertensions” or “Shortness of breath”
Glomerulonephritis
Glomerulonephritis happens when the ability to clean your blood is damaged and the ability to remove fluid and waste is no longer functioning. After a period of time, this can lead to kidney failure. Treatment depends on the cause of glomerulonephritis.
Nephrotic Syndrome
This kidney disorder happens when your body passes too much protein into your urine. Nephrotic syndrome is normally known to happen because of the damage to your kidneys and it no longer functions well in filtering excess water and waste from your blood.
Polycystic Kidney Disease
This is a genetic disorder that causes your kidneys and other organs to be filled with cysts. The kidney’s ability to remove fluid and waste from the kidney will be affected and over time, can lead to kidney failure. Treatment can be done to lower the symptoms and delay the cysts' growth.
Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS)
HUS happens when the small blood vessels in your kidney are damaged. The damage then causes blood clots to form and impacts the filtering system in the kidneys. This condition will eventually lead to kidney failure.
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)
A long-term condition affecting the kidneys and characterized by gradual loss of kidney function over time.
Procedures
Example: “Stenting” or “ECG”
Nephrectomy
A type of surgery that removes the entire kidney and the tumor within the kidney. Radical Nephrectomy is performed through an open incision, laparoscopically or with robot-assisted laparoscopic technologies. Unlike Radical Nephrectomy, this surgery is the removal of the tumor and spares the remainder of the kidney.
Renal Angioplasty
The procedure is done to enlarge the renal arteries and aid blood flow to the kidneys. The blocked arteries can be caused by atherosclerosis or fibrous disease.
Laparoscopic Kidney Cyst Ablation
This is a minimally invasive surgery performed to remove symptomatic kidney cysts while preserving the remainder of the kidney. It is usually recommended to patients who experience flank pain, abdominal pain or have a blocked kidney due to kidney cysts.
